  28. Thanks you for taking the time to look at Printer's Apprentice 6.1. This 
  29. file contains information about this package, what it does, and 
  30. what the system requirements are. 
  31.  
  32. Instructions for quickly installing Printer's Apprentice 6.1 are also 
  33. included. The manual for Printer's Apprentice is contained in an online
  34. help file (pa.hlp). 
  35.  
  36. Q. What is Printer's Apprentice?
  37. A. Printer's Apprentice is a font management utility for Windows
  38.    3.1 and Windows95. It helps you manage all your TrueType
  39.    and Adobe Type 1 fonts by printing font listings, character charts,
  40.    keyboard layouts, and font sample sheets.
  41.  
  42.    Printer's Apprentice is a great addition to the font CD-ROMs found
  43.    in many software shops. The Printer's Apprentice Font Install Wizard
  44.    lets you look at TrueType fonts BEFORE you install them! You can
  45.    even print a catalog of fonts from a CD/floppy/hard drive without
  46.    installing or copying a single file! 
  47.  
  48.    The Printer's Apprentice User's Guide is a full featured, context
  49.    sensitive Windows help file. A printed User's Guide is available
  50.    upon registration.
  51.  
  52. Q. What are the system requirements?
  53. A. Printer's Apprentice 6.1 will run on any PC running Windows 3.1,
  54.    Windows 3.11, or Windows 95. We recommend at least a 386 with
  55.    4 megs of memory. Printing functions will work on any printer,
  56.    but we recommend a laser printer for acceptable quality.
  57.    
  58.    This software also requires a copy of VBRUN300.DLL. This DLL can
  59.    be found on many BBS systems. It can also be found on Compuserve
  60.    in the DTPFORUM, library 6, VBRUN3.ZIP.
  61.  
  62. Q. What about Windows95?
  63.    Printer's Apprentice does work with Windows95. All functions, including
  64.    font printing, previewing and installation work with the new operating
  65.    system. Version 6.1 of this software (what you have in your hands!) was
  66.    released to solve a few minor problems that 6.0 had with Windows95. 
  67.  
  68.    Version 6.0 did work under Windows95, but the font install and uninstall
  69.    functions did not work. This release fixes those problems.
  70.  
  71.    We are currently working on an upgrade for Printer's Apprentice. 
  72.    The package is tentativly titled "Printer's Apprentice 32." This
  73.    release will be a "Designed for Windows95" application. It is being
  74.    100% rewritten as a 32 bit program for maximum speed and power! PA 32 
  75.    *will* require Windows95 or WindowsNT.
  76.  
  77.    When you register your copy of 6.1, you will be placed on the mailing
  78.    list and will be notified when the new version is available. We expect 
  79.    the software to be ready by the end of February.

  81. Q. What's New with 6.0 & 6.1?
  82. A. 6.0 adds Wizards for installing, uninstalling, and printing
  83.    TrueType fonts. There is also a resource Wizard that searches your
  84.    windows\system directory for unused font FOT files that take up
  85.    precious hard drive space. Printer's Apprentice can preview and
  86.    print uninstalled fonts (through the Wizards). This version is
  87.    also faster and takes up fewer system resources.
  88.  
  89.    6.1 is a minor release meant to fix some incompatabilities
  90.    with Windows95. Printer's Apprentice 6.1 is smart enough to
  91.    determine which version of Windows you are running and make
  92.    appropriate changes to your WIN.INI or registry file when
  93.    fonts are installed or uninstalled.

  95. Q. How do I quickly install Printer's Apprentice?
  96. A. Unzip the distribution ZIP file to a new diskette or directory 
  97.    and run SETUP.EXE. The installation program copies the files
  98.    files to your hard drive and creates a Program Manager icon
  99.    for Printer's Apprentice. By default, the Printer's Apprentice
  100.    icon will be placed in the Accessories group.
  101.  
  102.    If you are running Windows95, setup will create a Start menu item
  103.    in the Accessories group.
  104.  
  105. Q. I purchased and earlier version of Printer's Apprentice. Will
  106.    my registration password still work?
  107. A. The registration password you received with the diskette will
  108.    work with this and all future versions of Printer's Apprentice.
  109.  
  110. Q. How do I remove the program if I need more space on my machine?
  111. A. There is a file named INSTALL.LOG located in the PA directory. This
  112.    lists out *every* file and Program Manager group added to your system.
  113.    You can use this file to track down the EXE, VBX, and DLL files 
  114.    used by Printer's Apprentice. 
  115.  
  116.    Be aware, however, that other programs on your system may rely on 
  117.    the support VBX and DLL files used by Printer's Apprentice. This 
  118.    is especially true if you are an active user of many shareware 
  119.    programs. For example, lots of commercial and shareware packages
  120.    use the THREED.VBX library. If you delete this from your 
  121.    WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, you might get a <FILE NOT FOUND> error
  122.    when you try to run a program that uses this DLL.

  124. Q. How do I purchase this program?

  160. Q. What is the upgrade policy?
  161. A. When you register, I will send you a registration code, a diskette 
  162.    and a license card. Upon release of major upgrades, I will notify 
  163.    you with a post card. Upgrades run between $5-$10 to cover the cost 
  164.    of mailing, diskettes, and duplication. The registration codeword 
  165.    will always work for future versions of the product.

  167. Q. Printer's Apprentice seems to install OK, but when I try to run it, 
  168.    I get a "<filename>.VBX is out of date" error.  What is the problem?
  169. A. This is common for programs written in Visual Basic and Visual C++. 
  170.    VBX files are like DLL's. They are files with common routines used by 
  171.    many programs. "Out of Date" errors and other problems with VBX files 
  172.    are often caused by two problems.
  173.  
  174.    1. Version Control
  175.    Just like end-user software packages, VBX's are always being improved. 
  176.    Setup programs are supposed to check versions before installing a 
  177.    VBX/DLL file over one that is already on your computer. But this is 
  178.    not always the case. 
  179.  
  180.    2. Duplicate Files
  181.    VBX files are supposed to be placed in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory by
  182.    setup programs, but not everyone does this. Many times you will have 
  183.    duplicate copies of the same VBX in both your WINDOWS and your 
  184.    WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.  
  185.  
  186.    The installation program used by Printer's Apprentice makes every effort
  187.    to ensure the correct VBX files are placed in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM 
  188.    directory. However, if you already have an older copy of a VBX file in 
  189.    your WINDOWS directory, the setup program may not be able to detect it. 
  190.    So when PrinterÆs Apprentice loads, it may see the older VBX in your 
  191.    WINDOWS directory instead of the newer one that shipped with PA and was 
  192.    placed in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. (Got all that?) This is when you
  193.    get the "out of date" errors.
  194.  
  195.    The situation is easy, but tedious to fix. 
  196.    1. Search your hard drive for every copy of the VBX file that is 
  197.       giving you errors. 
  198.    2. If you have only one copy of that VBX file, then a recently installed 
  199.       software package copied it's older version of the VBX over the newer 
  200.       version that shipped with Printer's Apprentice. 
  201.  
  202.     a. Move the older VBX file to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory 
  203.     b. Rerun the Printer's Apprentice installation program.
  204.  
  205.    3. If you have multiple copies of the same VBX file (for example, one in 
  206.       windows and one in windows\system), then you need to figure out which is 
  207.       the most recent version and move it to the windows\system directory.
  208.  
  209.     a. Use the Windows 3.11 File Manager to find out which copy has 
  210.        the most recent version number. Select the file and press 
  211.        ALT-ENTER to see the file's properties.
  212.     b. Move the most recent one to the windows\system directory.
  213.     c. Move the older version off your computer to a floppy disk.
  214.  
  215.            - if you donÆt have the Windows 3.11 File Manager -
  216.  
  217.     a. Move all the duplicate copies of the VBX file to floppies.
  218.     b. Rerun the Printer's Apprentice installation program.
  219.  
  220.       Generally, you should only have one copy of each VBX file needed by your 
  221.       software programs. The VBX files should all be in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM 
  222.       directory so installation programs don't stumble...
  223.  
  224.       This problem does not just happen to Printer's Apprentice! 
  225.       Lose Your Mind Development distributes a program called VersionViewer 
  226.       for inspecting the version resources of executables, DLL's, VBX's, 
  227.       and drivers. See the help file for more information on this wonderful
